GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practices. It is the standard that regulates how any product intended for human consumption must be produced, from medicines to food supplements. If you are thinking about launching your brand or choosing a manufacturer, understanding what GMP means — and what it implies — is essential.

What exactly is GMP certification?

GMP is a quality control system that covers the entire manufacturing process: from the reception of raw materials to the packaging and shipping of the finished product. It is not a product certification, but a process and manufacturing plant certification.

In the European context of food supplements, the reference GMP standards are Regulation (EC) 852/2004 on food hygiene and the ISO 22000 standard (food safety management systems). Some manufacturers also obtain NSF GMP certification for international markets.

What European regulations require from manufacturers

For a laboratory to be GMP certified in the EU, it must comply with a series of requirements audited periodically:

Main GMP Requirements (Regulation EC 852/2004)
  • Facilities: design that avoids cross-contamination, washable surfaces, temperature and humidity control
  • Equipment: documented maintenance, periodic calibration of scales and analysis equipment
  • Personnel: hygiene training, restrictions for personnel with infectious diseases
  • Traceability: every batch must be traceable from raw material to final product
  • Quality Control: analysis of raw materials (COA), microbiological and physicochemical analysis of the finished product
  • Documentation: production records, written procedures (SOPs) for every operation
  • Non-compliance management: product recall protocol in case of a problem

The certification process step by step

Obtaining GMP certification is not something a manufacturer does overnight. It is a process that normally takes between 12 and 24 months and involves external audits by accredited bodies (such as Bureau Veritas, SGS, TÜV, or similar).

  1. GAP Analysis: the laboratory evaluates the distance between its current situation and the requirements of the standard.
  2. Improvement Plan: adaptation of facilities, equipment, procedures, and personnel training.
  3. Internal Audit: own review before the external audit.
  4. External Audit: the certifying body visits the plant and audits all points of the standard.
  5. Certificate Issuance: if it passes the audit, the certificate is issued with a validity of 1 to 3 years (renewable).
"A GMP certificate is not a document kept in a drawer. It is the result of a living system that must be maintained, updated, and audited continuously."

Why does it matter for your brand?

Manufacturing with a GMP laboratory gives you concrete and measurable advantages, not just peace of mind:

  • Legal Security: in case of a problem with a product, documented traceability protects both the manufacturer and the brand.
  • Access to Demanding Markets: large retailers, online platforms, and international distributors ask for the certificate before listing the product.
  • Batch-to-Batch Consistency: process control guarantees that every batch is equal to the previous one in concentration and quality.
  • Real Marketing Argument: you can communicate "manufactured in a GMP certified laboratory" with documentary support.
  • Export: certification facilitates sales in international markets that recognize the European standard.

How to verify that your manufacturer is truly GMP

Unfortunately, some laboratories claim to have GMP certification without having it or with expired certificates. Before signing any contract, verify:

  • Ask for a copy of the current GMP certificate (with issuance and expiration dates)
  • Check that the issuing body is accredited
  • Request the latest audit report (if they are transparent, there will be no problem)
  • Visit the facilities if possible; a GMP plant is noticeable in its cleanliness, order, and access protocols
